Gold Elephant
This gallery, currently under construction, will contain paintings from a wide span of years, reflecting development over a long period. Many, even if done decades ago, have never been shown or offered for sale. Therefore they are far from being “white elephants” – hence the name. There may also be extreme variations in price, from what might be termed sketches to major milestones in the work of the artist. -

Inauguration Day 2009
I came to Washington for Barack Obama’s inauguration, walking in the predawn hours to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington so that I could sketch, and my wife, Laura Sutherland, could photograph, the sun rising over the capital. We very quickly hiked up to the Lee-Custis Mansion for a different perspective. Then, at sunset, in bitter cold wind (but high spirits everywhere), I sat on the ground at the Washington Monument, facing the Lincoln Memorial, and sketched the sunset. In the weeks that followed I created a total of 24 paintings from that day.
