I eventually realized that I wanted a vantage point from right at the level of the reflecting pool. This wasn’t difficult to picture, since, in addition to having photos taken from the pool, I had spent three days checking out the Lincoln Memorial, two weeks earlier. This was the first study for the reflecting pool perspective, which later developed into the larger painting.

This was the first of the oil-on-paper studies of the sunset – like the sunrise, originally sketched on site with watercolor pencils. View is from just in front of the Washington Monument. Temperature was 27°F, wind north at around 15.
